Hi guys! It’s me again…Michele! Today is Wajima’s “Music for the Soul” day and I’ve decided to write about something that is a huge part of my life these days.
Cover bands. Yes, there is just something about them that I cannot get enough of. Whether they’re playing some of the latest hits, or playing songs from decades past, a GOOD cover band will surely have me on my feet dancing and singing (despite the fact that I cannot carry a tune…well, unless I’m alone in my car and then I’m pretty sure I sound like a rock star!)!
I’ve been very fortunate to build some amazing friendships with the members of a Greensboro, NC based cover band known as The Big Dirty. The band is made up of Chris York (vocals/guitar), Quincy Mooring (vocals/drums) and Brian Pugh (bass). I ADORE these guys so much…so much so that even as I sit here typing this out, I have a huge smile on my face! For the past 2 years, I’ve been able to hear these guys perform countless times and one thing is for sure…hearing them play NEVER gets old to me. Ever. Matter of fact, anytime I’m in my car and happen to hear one of the songs come on that they cover, I find myself wanting to hear The Big Dirty cover instead of the real deal!
I mean seriously, take a look at just a few of the songs below that they cover…I’m betting that you’ll see at least a song or two that you not only love, but that also immediately triggers memories of a specific time in your life when that song was first popular on the charts.
- High and Dry – Radiohead
- Hey Jude – The Beatles
- Jack & Diane – John Mellencamp
- Hey Nineteen – Steely Dan
- Stayin’ Alive – Bee Gees
- Don’t Stop Believing – Journey
- Tonight’s Gonna Be A Good Night – Black Eyed Peas
- Let’s Get It On – Marvin Gay
- Use Me – Bill Withers
- Purple Rain – Prince
- The Joker – Steve Miller Band
- Ain’t Too Proud To Beg – Temptations
- Don’t Let Me Down – The Beatles
- Take It Easy – The Eagles
- Red, Red Wine – UB40
- Another Brick In the Wall – Pink Floyd
For me, there is something so magical that happens inside me whenever I hear the beginning notes of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing” or Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On”! Woooo!
You know, whether or not you prefer cover bands or bands that write all of their own music, find out what local talent you have in the area YOU live in and make it a point to go out and show your support for them as often as you can! GO ON! Call some friends and start making plans for THIS weekend!
Here’s a couple videos that were taken of The Big Dirty a few months ago using the 8mm app…a little shaky (that would be MY fault!) but hopefully you’ll at least be able to get an idea of what these guys sound like! (Make note that in one of the videos, you’ll see an extra guy on guitar… Isaak Whitt, another local musician who occasionally comes out to rock with them!)
