Monday’s Eye Candy – Quincy Mooring!

At the age of 13, Quincy Mooring, was given an ultimatum by the choir director of the church he attended in North Carolina….either SING or learn how to PLAY an instrument.  So what did he do? He picked up a pair of drumsticks and began a life-long love affair with drumming. Being a part of his middle school band taught him the skills he needed to be able to read music, but ultimately, Quincy spent countless hours practicing and teaching himself how to play. THAT, my friends, blows. my. mind. To possess, even at the young age of 13, that kind of drive, determination, passion and raw talent is a rare and beautiful thing.

Quincy’s skills continued to improve and evolve throughout his teenage years as he played both in church and in his high school band.  It wasn’t until 2003, when he was in his early 20′s, that he became a part of his first band, a local band that was based in High Point, N.C. called Trial By Error.  Since then, he has played with numerous bands, both locally as well as nationally.  He has toured with both OURS and Plain Jane Automobile, and most recently, became a member of Colourslide (a band based out of Raleigh, N.C., who just so happen to also be one of the most spectacular combinations of musical talent, stunning looks, AND witty personalities that I have ever witnessed! Don’t take my word for it though…see for yourself!). Since early 2011, Quincy has had the opportunity to play with Colourslide in both North and South Carolina, Alabama, Florida, Texas, Delaware, New York, D.C., Virginia…and with a new album in the works, more shows are sure to be on tap for 2012.

Over the years, Quincy has been influenced by the drum styles of numerous drummers, but particuarly Steve Gadd, Dave Weckl, Dennis Chambers, and Calvin Napper, who is also a native of North Carolina.  Each of these accomplished drummers possess their own powerful styles and combined, these men provide decades worth of drumming that have inspired and played an important role in allowing Quincy to develop his own unique and diverse style of playing.

When I asked Quincy to describe to me what music is to him, he summed it up in one word…EVERYTHING. I love that answer…so simple, yet so infinite.

So here we are, 21 years later and his love affair with the drums is still going strong.  Thank you, Quincy, for sharing your passion and talent with ALL of us…and an extra special thank you for bringing ME out of the silence and back into the wonderful world of music.  You continue to amaze and inspire me, my friend!

The Soundtrack To: Needs

20111121-201607.jpg

I got to watching Sex and the City the other day looking for some ‘single girl’ advice, and what I gathered was that the same questions I had once had,  are still circulating in my mind. And in search of these answers I have suddenly realized that I’m back where I had left of seven years ago…absolutely nowhere!

In Season Four Episode 13, not only was Carrie friends with an old fling, but she was also back in a relationship with a man who had a million and one questions himself. Charlotte encountered that sometimes a cardboard baby will send anyone into an emotional roller-coaster ride, while Miranda found herself in a maternal disarray. Samantha managed to find the perfect (Dick) Richard, after sleeping with every man in the island of Manhattan, that I can’t help but question; this series isn’t really that far from the truth, now is it?

Women love shoes, and fashion. They love their corporate jobs, and expensive drapes. All the while having the same question:

when it comes to relationships, I couldn’t help but wonder, what are we fighting for?

As I went on to watch the relationship mess unfold right before my eyes (that might portrays some woman’s life out there somewhere) I found an answer for my needs that night, which is that I have manage to fall utterly and completely in love with Sade all over again.  And right now that’s the only answer I really need.

That’s the thing about needs, sometimes when you get them met, you don’t need them anymore.

Monday’s Eye Candy – Steve Jordan!

Steve Jordan has worked with numerous artists from Eric Clapton, Aretha Franklin, to Bob Dylan and The Rolling Stones, but only one artist stands out more than all the rest for me, and that is none other than the virtuoso, John Mayer. Steve joined the John Mayer Trio back in 2005, taking Mayer’s music to all new heights. He produced Continuum alongside John, and ventured off into the world of musical bliss for the next five years, but not before bringing to an end the most beautiful winter tour yet, Battle Studies ’09-’10. He parted ways right before the summer tour began, by letting everyone know that he was going to take a break, due to not wanting to be on a tour bus for the rest of his life… however I’m sure we’ll see more of Steve Jordan sooner than not. He’s just too talented to stay in doors!

Music for the Soul-Take Care-Drake!

Buzz around town; well more like Sweden to New York to M.I.A, is that ‘Take Care’ is the must have album of the year.  I spend most of my afternoon listening to the extended edition from Itunes, and I couldn’t believe how flippin’ sexy hot this record is. Drizzy has done it again and CNN said it best.

“Hip-hop has never produced anything quite like Drake — a guy with a Jay-Z ego and a Charlie Brown soul.”-CNN

Monday’s Eye Candy- Gabriel Beltran!

The first time I saw this Latin Pop Rock band from Miami was back in August at Tobacco Road, now as a Latina I’m a little embarrassed to admit that I wasn’t  into Spanish rock, until I came across this band.  If it weren’t for my busy schedule, I would totally be front and center at all their shows in town.  They are just to damn good to miss which brings me to my  2nd choice for this November’s drummer feast ;).  Meet Gabriel Beltran, he’s the spicy drummer for the hot sizzling band from Miami,  AVENIDA ZERO.  Gabriel discovered  the drums at the tender age of 2 … you don’t believe me? See for yourself!

After spending most of his childhood moments making music out of  empty buckets of paint, by the time he reached 14  he was able to get  his hands on his very first real set of drums.  Growing up in the 90′s influence his music taste from Nirvana, to Offspring, to Green Day & then Foo Fighter’s, which set tone for Spanish rock music to enter is life, and being moved by bands such as Manà, 2 Minutos & Soda Stereo.  He later on decided to start his own punk rock band called Area 51, back in his native country of Uruguay, as time progressed so did his passion for music.  At the age of 17,  Gabriel ventured off into Brazilian jazz that lead him to pop rock, and by 22 he made his way into the US setting his eyes on Miami.  This landed  him right where he needed to be, working alongside people in the music industry which paved the way for him to work with talents such as Dulce Maria who performed in ‘Premios Juventud’ 2011.

His skills have allowed him to venture off onto the most important project to date, being the drummer for one of the hottest Spanish bands in Miami. I love a musician that’s well rounded in his craft, heck you have to be if you’re planning on making it in this business.   Please don’t forget to follow Gabriel and his band  AvenidaZeroband on twitter, and also like them on facebook for up coming tours & events.
